If there was one thing that I miss most from my MFA experience, it's designing books from cover to cover, from plain text to physical object. This page showcases three books I designed as student projects, with full digital flipbooks and photos of the finished books, as well as snapshots of a few books I completed as freelance projects.
Beyond Surface
Beyond Surface is a collection of supplied essays on graphic design. I assembled the 7 academic design essays into a 131-page reader set in typefaces Laima and Halyard Micro.
Science & Stitch
I decided to focus on Australian fiber artist, Meredith Woolnough in designing this artist monograph. The articles are sourced from TextileArtist.org, The School of Stitched Textiles, Polyfield Magazine, Embroidery Magazine, X-Ray Mag, Arte Morbida, and Woolnough's own website. I was inspired by the bright colors and fascinating textures in Woolnough's work in my choices of colors and typefaces. This 78-page publication is set in Branch, Mrs Eaves XL Serif OT, and Montserrat.
Readability, Accessibility, Typography
This research publication is a collection of 12 articles related to the topic of accessible typography. I seriously considered accessibility when choosing typefaces and made the careful selection of Tisa Pro and Politica for this 143 page book.
Ancestry Photobooks
These two projects were family history photobooks for two different families. The books that I designed for the families include detailed family histories, first-person family stories, recipes, and family photos. Selected spreads from each are visible below.
Voting Rights Journal
For this project, I designed the interior of a voting rights activity journal aimed at a pre-teen audience to teach kids about the history of voting rights and how to get involved in advocating for a government that works for all of us.
Wildlife Photobook
For this project, I designed a book showcasing wildlife and nature photos for photographer, RW Reels. This project was an excellent exercise in using white space to emphasize the photos being displayed.
